Iran’s Mosques, Holy Sites to Remain Closed for Two Weeks
Speaking at the meeting in Tehran on Sunday of the National Headquarters for Fighting Coronavirus, Rouhani lauded the efforts made in the country, especially those by medical staff and nurses, to contain the spread of the virus.
He hailed the successes in the battle with the disease but said some measures still need to remain in place.
Referring to the upcoming Ramadan, the president noted that mosques and holy places always attract a large number of worshipper in the holy month but this year, it is necessary that these places remain closed to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
The fasting month of Ramadan will begin next week as the COVID-19 disease is spreading in the world.
The coronavirus outbreak that originated in Wuhan, China, has infected over 2.3 million people around the world and killed more than 160,000.
In Iran, nearly 56,000 coronavirus positive cases have recovered from the infectious disease, the Health Ministry spokesman said, adding that the daily death toll from COVID-19 in the country dropped for the fifth consecutive day on Saturday.
Kianoosh Jahanpoor put the death toll from the coronavirus in Iran at 5,031.
The total number of those infected with the disease in the country as of Saturday was 80,868.
