The mourning ceremonies are held during the month of Muharram at Maqam Imam Hussein (AS), said Ahmed Rassim Al-Nafis who heads the Al-Tahrir party, Akhbarak website reported.
He said Shi’ism is the school of martyrdom and that those who oppose the mourning rituals are against the logic of uprising against injustice and oppression.
Al-Nafis further noted that threats against Shias in Egypt have declined since the ouster of former president Mohamed Morsi but there are still cases of anti-Shia activities.
He said that, for example, the authorities closed the Ras-ul-Hussein Mosque in Cairo on the Eid Al-Qadir and prevented Shia worshippers from entering the mosque.
On the presidential elections in Egypt, he said Shias have not reached a consensus over a candidate.
The number of Egyptian Shias, who are a minority in the north African country, is estimated to be more than a million.
