A Shia leader in Egypt urged for punishing those who provoke sectarian Fitna (strife) in the country.

Sheikh Salim Al-Sabbaq said the new constitution of Egypt should include an article that upholds religious freedom and considers punishment for fomenting sectarian discord, Al-Mosri Al-Yawm website reported.

Al-Sabbaq also criticized Egypt’s constituent assembly for not allowing Shias to join the assembly and paying no heed to the demands of Shia Muslims.

He said if the issue of religious freedom and punishment for spreading religious hatred is not included in the draft constitution, Shias will give a No vote to it.

Al-Sabbaq further said the government of Saudi Arabia is trying to prevent recognition of Shias and their demands in Egypt’s new administration.

Shias, who form just one percent of Egypt’s population, are often under attack by extremist groups in the North African country.
