Head of the International Union of Muslim Scholars said participation in Egypt’s constitutional referendum is Haram (religiously forbidden).

Yusuf Al-Qaradawi said not even one verse of the Quran or Hadith of the Prophet (PBUH) has been mentioned in the draft constitution, Al-Hayat daily reported.

Posting a statement in his Facebook page, he called for a boycott of the referendum.

Egypt prepares to hold a nationwide referendum on the new constitution next week. The 247-article draft constitution was completed in December by a 50-member assembly selected by the army-backed interim government.

Al-Qaradawi said participation in the referendum or any other action that leads to the enhancement of the current Egyptian government is collaboration in sin and is, therefore, Haram.

He, once again, regarded the ouster of the former president Mohamed Morsi as a military coup against a democratically-elected president.

Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood has also rejected the draft constitution and has called for a boycott of the referendum.

Mohamed Morsi, a member of Muslim Brotherhood, was ousted on July 3, 2013. Tensions in Egypt have been running high since then.
