The country’s Awqaf and Islamic Affairs Ministry organizes the weeklong Quranic event, Al-Bawaba news website reported. 44 countries have sent their Quranic representatives to the Egyptian capital to take part in the competition at Al-Azhar Hall in Cairo’s Nasr district. Some 65 contenders will compete in the four categories of the contest, including memorization of the entire Quran along with Tajweed and Tarteel recitation and questions on the Sha’an Nuzul (reason of revelation) of verses. Winners of the contest will receive cash prizes of up to one million Egyptian liras, the organizers said. Egypt has recently disinvited Turkey and Qatar from taking part in the Quran event over political disputes.
