Lori Saroya, CAIR Executive Director, speaking on behalf of other Muslims said "the FBI has visited every Mosque in the Twin Cities area and in most mosques across Minnesota asking Muslims to become informants."
Saroya said CAIR wants to cooperate with the FBI and "we, as Muslims, have a religious and civic duty to report information about possible crimes, to law enforcement and we will." But, Saroya said when FBI agents show up at mosques it is intimidating and creates an atmosphere of fear and mistrust.
Saroya said agents have visited her home telling her it was part of a community outreach effort and "then you realize it is field agents who start asking investigative-type questions." Saroya added that law-abiding Muslims have the same rights under the Constitution as any other citizen and advised Muslims to cooperate with authorities, but always with an attorney present.
Saroya went on to say that there is right way and a wrong way to approach people about investigations and visiting mosques to recruit people to spy is not fair, "because it profiles the entire Muslim community and affects innocent people."
We asked the FBI to comment on the entire scenario presented by Saroya, but a spokesperson declined to do an interview.
