--The closing ceremony of the third Ashura Rituals Conference was held in Tehran Thursday night.
In his speech at the ceremony, Minister of Culture and Islamic Guidance Mohammad Hossein Saffar Harandi said that contrary to what many believe, the first uprising against the unjust rule of Yazeed after the event of Ashura took place in Iran.

“Many of us think that the uprising by the Tavvabeen and Mokhtar was the first movement against the Umayyads after Imam Hossein (AS) and his companions were martyred in Karbala. However, research studies by some scholars including the late Ayatollah Davani shows that the revolt of the people in Sistan which led to the toppling Ibn Ziad’s brother, the ruler of the region, took place before any other movement,” he maintained.

“We can say that it was from then that the love for Imam Hossein (AS) and his cause took root in Iranians’ hearts,” he said.

The Minister of Culture noted that the efforts made by artists throughout history have made the mourning ceremonies for Imam Hossein (AS) to be held more fervently year after year. “Different forms of art including poetry, stories, painting, and Taziyeh (religious play) have been employed by our artists to keep the event of Ashura alive.”

Singing some religious songs by vocalist Hessameddin Seraj and a Taziyeh performance titled ‘Behind the Tents’ were among other programs held at the closing ceremony of the third Ashura Rituals Conference.

Also present at the ceremony were Mostafa Rahmandoost secretary of children and teenagers’ theater festival, Mohammad Hossein Imani Khoskhoo art deputy of the Culture Ministry, Majid Sarsangi head of Pardis Theater Group, Iraj Rad managing director of the Theater House, and a number of other art and cultural figures.
