Iğdır University to Set up Center for Shia Studies

-- A center for studies on Jafari Shia Islam will be established at Iğdır University in Turkey, Zeynabia Website reports.
According to a statement issued by the university this week, the center would offer PhD and postgraduate courses on Shia Islam. It aims to train scholars knowledgeable about Shia culture and sciences. Those graduating from the center will not only teach others about Shia Islam but also promote fraternity and solidarity between followers of different Islamic schools of thought.
The statement said that Jafari Shia is an influential school of thought in the Islamic world, especially in the region, and therefore studying it is necessary.
Turkey’s people are predominantly Sunni Muslims and Shia Muslims make up some 30 percent of the population. Iğdır is a province in northeastern Turkey where a large number of Shia Muslims live.
