-- The Friday prayer leader of the holy city of Najaf slammed an Al-Qaeda assault on a Baghdad church last week.
Addressing worshippers at Al-Fatimiyeh religious center in Najaf yesterday, Sayyid Sadreddin Qapanchi extended condolences to the victim’s families and stressed the need for solidarity between Iraqi Muslims and Christians.
He called for more government protection for Christians and other Iraqi citizens and said the incident was a human catastrophe.
Some 46 hostages were killed Sunday during a hostage drama with Al-Qaeda gunmen in Baghdad's Sayidat al-Nejat Syriac Catholic cathedral.
Elsewhere in his sermon, najaf’s Friday prayer leader referred to the great annual gathering of Hajj and urged Iraqi pilgrims to promote unity and fraternity during the Hajj rituals.
