If there is no economic independence, there would be no economic security, an Islamic economics expert said.
Addressing a forum of “Economic Security in Islamic Society”, Hojat-ol-Islam Seyyed Hossein Mirmoezzi added that if a country is forced to concede to the other side in economic interactions, that country is not independent and therefore is insecure.
He noted that the enemy of such a country would impose its will on it and bring loss to the country that lacks independence.
Member of the Supreme Council of Islamic-Iranian Model of Development, said security is either personal or social, both of which are emphasized in Islam.
“In the Hadiths we have received from the Infallibles (AS), great emphasis has been put on the importance of personal security,” he underlined.
Hojat-ol-Islam Mirmoezzi stressed that according to a Hadith by the Holy Prophet of Islam (AS), ensuring security for the properties of people in Islamic society is very important.
He said the emphasis on security for properties actually shows the prominence of economic security in Islam.
The scholar further pointed to the relation between independence, self-sufficiency, and economic power, saying that economic security is linked to these issues.
Security of the Islamic society and country at the macro level can be threatened by internal or external factors, he said.
“For example, if property laws in a country are unjust, people’s wealth and properties are threatened, and this is an internal factor.
“On the other hand, a foreign country may threaten the interests and properties of a country, which will jeopardize its economic security. We can have economic security in the face of foreign threats when we have economic independence.”
The academic board member of the Islamic Culture and Thought Research Center stated that economic independence refers to a country’s negotiating power, in other words, how much a country can decide to agree or disagree with the conditions set by the other side in an interaction.
He underlined that in an interaction, when conditions are imposed on a country, it cannot be regarded as independent. “If a country is not independent, it is not secure either, because the enemy imposes more of its will on that country day after day.”
Hojat-ol-Islam Mirmoezzi noted that this equation is also applicable in politics. “When a country is not powerful, it will not have political independence and without political independence, there will be no political security.”
The forum on “Economic Security in Islamic Society” was held at the Iranian Academic Quranic Activities Organization. It was one in a series of sessions featuring Islamic economics.
