The West and the “axis of compromise” failed to defeat the axis of resistance in 2006 and separate Bashar Al-Assad from Iran, Iran’s Cultural Attaché in Syria said.
In an interview with IQNA, Hojat-ol-Islam Ali Khayyat added that after the defeat, the West started hatching a plot to generate a crisis in Syria over the next ten years.
“When the Islamic Awakening movement emerged, the West thought it could precipitate implementing the project, but failed to realize that Syria is different from other Arab establishments.”
He underlined that Syria’s opposition groups have never been popular at all.
“Unlike other Islamic Awakening revolutions in the region which started in the central parts of the countries and whose common theme was hostility toward Israel, the Syrian crisis began in Dara’a in the corner of the country and from early days the slogans (of the opposition) were different from those heard in other countries swept by the Islamic Awakening movement.”
Hojat-ol-Islam Khayyat noted that Syria’s opposition even had no qualms about pledging peace with the Zionist regime and severing Syria’s ties with countries opposed to the Zionist regime.
He stressed Syrian people’s support for Bashar Al-Assad, saying that even after so much negative propaganda against Assad, a poll conducted by a Qatari institute showed that despite all the pressures and crises, 60 percent of Syrians still support Assad.
The Iranian cultural attaché said the opposition has never managed to rally support again the government, adding that anti-Syria TV networks like Saudi-based Al-Arabia and Qatar-based Al-Jazeera tried to fake reports to present a distorted picture of the situation.
“They, for instance, aired clips related to anti-government demonstrations in Yemen and Libya while reporting on Syria.”
He stressed that foreign hands are clearly at work in Syria and that makes it different from the awakening in other Arab countries. “If we have a look at the countries in which (Islamic Awakening) developments have been underway, we see that they are all countries ruled by dictators with ties with the Occupying regime (of Israel). However, in Syria the government has been in the front-line of resistance and opposition to Israel.”
Hojat-ol-Islam Khayyat referred to peacefulness as a characteristics of the Islamic Awakening movement, saying that in Bahrain, for instance, popular protests have not turned into an armed conflict even after 22 months, whereas in Syria, the opposition groups adopted an armed approach from day three and have since committed many crimes and atrocities.
He went on to say that the Syrian army tried to safeguard people’s lives and prevent damage to the cities invaded by the rebels, otherwise the crisis would have been dealt with long ago.
