Head of the Awqaf and Charity Affairs Organization said over 900,000 individuals have attended this year’s edition of the Awqaf National Quran Competition.
Speaking before Friday prayer sermons at Tehran University campus yesterday, Hojat-ol-Islam Ali Mohammadi noted that the number of contestants in 2009, 2010, and 2011 was 30,000, 50,000, and 450,000, respectively.
In his speech, the cleric also pointed to the importance of Waqf (religious endowment), saying that one who endows his wealth on the path of God, is actually making a sacrifice and confronting his selfishness.
Hojat-ol-Islam Mohammadi referred to the activities of the Awqaf and Charity Affair Organization, saying that it has set up a data bank containing information about endowed properties and the holy shrines in 500 parts of the country.
He also noted that over millions of people visit the holy shrines, whose custodian is the Awqaf Organization, benefiting from the cultural and religious programs organized in these holy places.
Hojat-ol-Islam Mohammadi further urged the elites, preachers, university and seminary scholars and Friday prayer leaders to promote the culture of Waqf in the society.
