Mohsen Eslami made the remark while addressing a forum about the US society’s cultural and social situation, adding that a discourse vacuum has occurred in the US and American elites are incapable of predicting the future because capitalism itself is facing a crisis.
The forum was organized on Monday by the Islamic Culture and Relations Organization.
He said due to the vacuum, the United States cannot manage the crises in Egypt, Syria and Bahrain.
Eslami said capitalism is an essential element of the American society, referring to New York City as the symbol of capitalism and its Manhattan neighborhood as the place where the majority of the wealthy capitalists reside.
He said the United States’ very existence depends on capitalism, while wealthy capitalists only make up 1 percent of the American society.
This minority refused to have the slightest participation in curbing the human, economic and social crises caused by the Hurricane Sandy- which caused the greatest damage to their own neighborhood, Eslami stated.
He rejected any leftist tendencies in the anti-Wall Street movement, saying that those attending the protests were opposed to the discriminatory system ruling the United States, a country where 50 million citizens lack social welfare.
Iran’s cultural representative in the US pointed to the $17 million spent by the US police to crack down on the Occupy Wall Street protesters and said while the crackdown was going on, none of the American media covered the movement.
He also said he believes the reason for banning Iran’s overseas media was preventing a media coverage of the new crises in the West.
