This is according to Muhammad Saleh Al-Hidri, head of Tunisia’s Justice and Development Party who also told IQNA that Salafists are the same as Khawarij who deviated from the right path of Islam and are a serious threat to other Muslims.
He said Salafists have no belief in peace, dialogue and respect for others and by destroying shrines and holy sites based on the illogical teachings of Abdul-Wahab, pave the way for the enemies of Islam.
Al-Hidri underlined that what Wahabis and Salafists do can not be attributed to Sunni Muslims because Sunnis do not sanction desecration of holy sites.
“Sunnis, like their Shia brothers, are opposed to and victims of the dogmatic ideas of Wahabis.”
Asked about the role of Muslim scholars in confronting Salafists, the Tunisian political figure said scholars of different Islamic schools of thought should hold meetings to discuss the issue.
They should also clarify the issue for the public via the media and warn people against the dangers of Salafists, he added.
Al-Hidri said today a media war is underway and any group that can take control of the media will be the winner. “Therefore, we should not allow countries that support Wahabists and other extremist groups to deceive people through the media.”
He further said the conflicts in Muslim countries like Syria and Mali are not Shia-Sunni conflicts. “[The militants] in Syria and Mali are those who have been deceived by the media campaign of the Wahabists and come from different places to these two countries to take up arms (against the governments).”
Al-Hidri also pointed to the seditious activities of Wahabis in Tunisia, saying that these activities are supported by Persian Gulf countries, especially the Wahabis of Saudi Arabia.
He said that following the victory of the revolution and ouster of Ben Ali, Wahabists and Salafists gained power receiving financial support from certain countries.
Al-Hidri’s Justice and Development Party was established on March 18, 2011. It political approach is based on the philosophy of Ibn Khaldoun who believed that justice is the foundation for development and that no government will last without justice.
