New Quran Experts Should Be Allowed in Jury Panels of Int’l Quran Contests

Syria Quran scholar Muhammad Ihsan Al-Sayyed Hassan who has served in jury panel of several international Quran contests made the remake in an interview with IQNA, adding that some Quran experts that have good performance are not invited to work as judges in Quran contests.
He said Quran competitions are venues for Quran memorizers and reciters to get acquainted with and learn one another.
“If a reciter or memorizer only limits himself to Quran competitions in his own country, he will not be able to grow and refine his talents and improve his performance as he could by attending international Quranic events.”
Al-Sayyed Hassan also underlined that international Quran contests play an important part in spreading the Quranic culture in societies and bring together Quran activists from different countries.
He referred to lack of coordinated laws and regulations as a shortcoming in international Quran contests and said the limited number of categories is another problem that should be taken care of by raising the number of categories.
The Syrian scholars said organizers of such competitions can, for instance, add the category of Quran interpretation to their contest.
He said there can even be Quran competitions exclusively held in the category of interpretation because it would help Quran reciters and memorizers to better understand the meaning of the verses.
Asked about the idea of forming an international committee under the supervision of the organization of Islamic Cooperation to coordinated activities related to judging Quran competitions, Al-Sayyed Hassan considered it a good idea provided that all Quran experts can have the opportunity to join the committee.
He also urged that innovations are needed to determine the level of Quran experts who seek to serve as jury members of Quran contests.
The scholar was also asked which Muslim countries have been more successful in organizing international Quran competitions. He said all of the countries that hold such competitions have been successful because they spare no efforts to improve the level of their competitions.
Muhammad Ihsan Al-Sayyed Hassan, who is an Al-Azhar graduate in the field of Usul Al Din (Principles of Islam), served in the jury panel of the Islamic Republic of Iran’s 28th International Holy Quran Competition.
