I don't buy Washington and EU countries wanting Morsi released. They want control. They want subservient Egyptian leadership. They want Arab spring notions quelled. They want what they won't get.
Stephen Lendman, renowned author, award-winning journalist and research associate of the Center for Research on Globalization (CRG) who is based in Chicago and has written extensively on war and peace, social justice in America and many other national and international issues, made the remarks in an interview with IQNA, adding that on July 3, Egypt's General Sisi-led Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF) ousted Morsi illegitimately. It did so by coup d'etat.
He said a coup is a coup is a coup. There's no ambiguity. John Kerry lied claimed SCAF wants democracy restored. Maybe he means US-style. America's no democracy. It wasn't created to be one. It's not one now. Duopoly power rules. Monied interests control things. Kerry wants the same thing in Egypt. So do Obama and Congress.
“Egypt's military maintained control for decades. Leaders like Mubarak were former generals. Nothing's different now. Morsi was elected because Washington initially supported him. But then Mass opposition made him damaged goods. He caused a lot of his own trouble but it's no reason to remove him extrajudicially.”
According to Mr. Lendman, Nothing ahead looks promising. Pro and anti-Morsi sides are hardline. So is Egypt's military. Hundreds already died. Thousands were injured. Many are imprisoned. Greater conflict looms. So does potential civil war. If it erupts, all bets are off. A potential bloodbath may follow. It could spill cross border. It affects Lebanon already. It could arouse Arabs in other countries to want liberating justice.
The American journalist further referred to the situation in the region and said it's happening in Tunisia. It's longstanding in Bahrain. Daily Iraq violence is out-of-control. Jordanians are restless. So are Saudis and other Arab people. A real Arab spring is possible. It won't be without lots of bloodshed. How it will end who knows. It's not easy going against brute military force.
Asked about reasons of Morsi’s removal, Mr. Lendman said it absolutely was extrajudicially ousted by coup d'etat authorized by Washington. Things look like back to the future. Reinstituting Mubarakism looks likely. It will take months or years to resolve.
He added pro and anti-Morsi supporters are protesting. Egypt's military is no neutral force. It's hardline. It's brutal. It maintains control. It's going all out to keep it. General Sisi announced he's running for president. Win or lose, junta rule will continue. Civilian bureaucrats/technocrats serve at its pleasure.
Elsewhere in his remarks, Stephen Lendman said Egypt is a strategic US ally. It's the region's most important Arab state. Washington provides up to $1.5 billion annually in mostly military aid. It buys lots of influence. America wants control. It wants final say. It wants vassal states. Independent ones aren't tolerated. Obama will go all out to assure Egypt's subservient to US interests. It's been that way for decades. It won't likely change - at least short and intermediate term.
“Morsi supported Washington's war on Syria. He likely wanted more civilian and less military role in politics. A sure way to pit him against junta authority. I suspect he preferred better ties with Iran. Especially with Hassan Rohani.”
The American author added that he doesn't buy Washington and EU countries wanting Morsi released. They want control. They want subservient Egyptian leadership. They want Arab spring notions quelled. They want what they won't get.
“Obama and other Western leaders say one thing. Their rhetoric belies their policies. So-called diplomacy is fig leaf cover. America prioritizes advancing its imperium. It wants unchallenged regional control.
“US bases infest the region. America wants more. It wages war for power. Syria's prelude to conflict against Iran. Hezbollah is targeted.”
He said Washington wants all independent governments replaced by subservient pro-Western ones. It stops at nothing to achieve its aims.
“Nothing ahead looks promising. The entire region could explode. My greatest fear is possible global war. I think Russia has its own red line. It has strategic regional interests. It won't surrender them easily. I watch events closely. I'll write more as things develop,” he said.
