What is the most promising verse in the Holy Quran? People living in Imam Ali’s (AS) era gave different responses to this question.
Quran is a book full of hope. From the very first verse (In the Name of God), it tells us that we are not alone. God, the Most Compassionate, the Most Merciful, is with us.
But which verse is the most promising? Imam Ali (AS) asked this question to group of people. They had different answers. One cited verse 48 of Surah Al-Nisa, “Indeed, Allah does not forgive association with Him, but He forgives what is less than that for whom He wills.”
Another one pointed to verse 110 of the same Surah, “And whoever does a wrong or wrongs himself but then seeks forgiveness of Allah will find Allah Forgiving and Merciful.”
Another promising verse mentioned that day was verse 53 of Surah Al-Zumar, “Say, O My servants who have transgressed against themselves [by sinning], do not despair of the mercy of Allah . Indeed, Allah forgives all sins. Indeed, it is He who is the Forgiving, the Merciful.”
And there was verse 134 of Surah Al-e Imran. “And those who, when they commit an immorality or wrong themselves [by transgression], remember Allah and seek forgiveness for their sins - and who can forgive sins except Allah ? - and [who] do not persist in what they have done while they know.”
Then Imam Ali (AS) said, “I heard from the Prophet of God who said the most promising verse of the Quran is this “And establish prayer at the two ends of the day and at the approach of the night. Indeed, good deeds do away with misdeeds. That is a reminder for those who remember.”” (Surah Hud, verse 114).
