29 rare manuscript copies of Islamic books have been stolen from the library of Egypt’s Al-Azhar University.
Sheikh Ahmed Al-Tayyeb, the sheikh of Al-Azhar, has held the Mirath (heritage) Library’s officials responsible for the incident and given their name to Egypt’s prosecutor general, Al-Misriyun daily reported.
A committee headed by Abdul Fattah Issa Idrisi has been formed to investigate the robbery.
The stolen manuscripts are estimated to be worth billions of Egyptian pounds, experts say.
The Al-Azhar University is the only center that had the stolen manuscripts and there are no more copies of the books available.
