TEHRAN (IQNA) - An international conference on fighting terrorism and religious extremism began on Sunday in the Syrian capital of Damascus.

Political, religious, cultural and social figures from 21 countries are attending the two-day event, SANA reported.
They are from countries like Tunisia, France, the US, Russia, Romania, Britain, Bulgaria, South Africa, Iran, Yemen, Austria and Turkey.
Terrorism and national sovereignty, terrorism in view of international law, terrorism and religious extremism, and illegality of unilateral economic sanctions against Syria are the themes of the conference.
Addressing the conference on the first day, Syrian Prime Minister Wael al-Halqi described terrorism as a global problem and said combating terrorism is a global responsibility.
He also called for holding an international gathering under the supervision of the United Nations to provide a clear definition of terrorism as it will be helpful in tackling the issue of terrorism.
Syria has been facing deadly violence since March 2011. Thousands of people have been killed in attacks by terrorists who have come to Syria from various countries.
Western powers and some of their regional allies- especially Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Turkey- are reportedly supporting the terrorists operating in the Arab country.
