The terrorists destroyed the museum’s ancient artifacts representing Iraq’s millennia-old heritage and civilization, and stormed the Mosul library, burning large collections of rare books and manuscripts.
ISESCO Director General said that such artifacts and books constitute a universal heritage that should be preserved and whose importance and significance should be imparted to future generations.
He stressed the importance of mobilizing international support for protecting heritage and cultural diversity in Iraq and Syria, and severely punishing individuals and parties involved in the illicit trafficking in stolen antiques, artifacts and manuscripts.
By the same token, Dr Altwaijri called on the United Nations and regional and international organizations concerned with heritage and universal civilization to redouble their efforts to this end.
