“By 2050 there will be near parity between Muslims (2.8 billion, or 30% of the population) and Christians (2.9 billion, or 31%), possibly for the first time in history,” the Pew Research projections said.
According to the study, Muslims will nearly equal Christians at mid-century, with a 30% increase in the followers of the peaceful faith.
Both Islam and Christianity, the world' largest religious groups, will make more than 69% of the global population in 2100, rising from 61% in 2050 and 55% in 2010, according to the research.
Released on Thursday, April 2, the study showed that Islam followers are rising globally, while unaffiliated populations are shrinking.
Expected to have the world's largest Muslim population by 2050, India will surpass Indonesia, currently the world's most populous Muslim state.
“Indonesia will have the third-largest number of Muslims, with Pakistan ranking second.”
Muslims will present 10% of the overall population in Europe by 2050.
