TEHRAN (IQNA) – A senior Iranian cleric criticized the United Nations and the Security Council for remaining silent over the atrocities committed against the people of Yemen.

Addressing Friday prayers worshipers in Tehran yesterday, Ayatollah Kazem Sediqi said the UN and the Security Council are watching in silence the crimes by an aggressive government against the innocent Yemeni nation.

On March 26, Riyadh and some of its Arab allies launched a military campaign against the Houthi Ansarullah movement in an attempt to restore power to the fugitive former President Abd Rabbuh Mansour Hadi, a close ally of Saudis.

More than 4000 people, many of them children and women, have been killed in the Saudi-led aggression against the Arab country so far but the international community has failed to take any steps to stop the illegal attacks.

Elsewhere in his Friday prayers sermon, Ayatollah Sediqi referred to the issue of Palestine as the number one issue in the Muslim world and underlined that the Zionist regime is the root cause of problems in the region.

He further pointed to the crises in Syria and Iraq and said the United States and Britain are seeking the disintegration of regional countries in a bid to undermine Muslim countries.

Ayatollah Sediqi went on to say that the Americans, the British and the Zionists are behind the rise of the ISIL terrorist group in the region.

The ISIL militants made swift advances in much of northern and western Iraq over the summer, after capturing large swaths of northern Syria.

They have been committing heinous crimes in the areas under their control.
