TEHRAN (IQNA) – Bahraini forces attacked a religious mourning ceremony south of the capital, Manama, that had turned into protests against the ruling Al Khalifa regime.

Attacks on Saturday were reported in the village of Nuwaidrat, where people were attending a ceremony to mark Ashura, the anniversary of the martyrdom of Imam Hussein (AS), the grandson of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and third Shia Imam.

The people reportedly gathered in front of the house of Abdul Wahhab al-Hussain, the jailed leader of Bahrain’s al-Wafa society, who organized the first anti-government protest in Nuwaidrat in 2011, and called for the Manama regime to release political prisoners and stop the crackdown on dissent, Press TV reported.

The ceremony turned into a protest with people chanting slogans against the Al Khalifa regime, Mira't al-Bahrain, a website close to the opposition in Bahrain, said. Regime forces then attacked the people and fired tear gas to disperse them, according to the report.

There was no immediate report on any potential arrests and injuries during the clashes.

Anti-regime demonstrations were also held in other areas, including in Juffair and Sitra, where people reportedly held portraits of people killed in the regime crackdown over the past few years.

Scores of people have been killed and hundreds arrested over the past few years of the crackdown on anti-regime demonstrations by the Manama regime.
