TEHRAN (IQNA) – A ceremony was held in Beirut on Thursday to commemorate Ghazanfar Roknabadi, the former Iranian ambassador to Lebanon who died in a crush of Hajj pilgrims in Mina, Saudi Arabia in September.

The memorial service was held by the Iranian embassy at Bi’r Hassan district in the Lebanese capital, the Taghrib news website reported.

Addressing the event, Iranian Ambassador Mohammad Fathali highlighted the role of Roknabadi in supporting the resistance movement.

He also reiterated the need for pursuing all aspects of the Mina tragedy.

A number of foreign ambassadors to Lebanon, including the Vatican envoy, as well as political figures like former Lebanese foreign minister Adnan Mansour also addressed the ceremony, highlighting different aspects of late Roknabadi’s character and efforts.

Roknabadi went missing after the deadly crush of pilgrims in Mina, Saudi Arabia, on September 24.

Thousands of pilgrims, including over 460 Iranians, were killed in the tragic incident.

Roknabadi’s body was only identified last week, two months after the Mina tragedy.

His body arrived in Tehran last Friday and was laid to rest at a holy site north of Tehran.

Saudi authorities have come under fire for their inability to ensure the safety of hundreds of thousands of pilgrims who converge on the holy city of Makkah every year.

Earlier on September 11, a massive construction crane crashed into Makkah’s Grand Mosque in stormy weather, killing at least 107 people, including 11 Iranians, and injuring 201 others.
