TEHRAN (IQNA) – Amnesty International urged the Bahraini authorities to quash human rights activist Zainab Al-Khawaja's prison sentences, after the appeals court dropped her right to appeal because she "didn't attend the hearing."

Zainab Al-Khawaja's one-year sentence for speaking out in defense of another prisoner while she was in prison in June 2013, and her four-month sentence for ripping up photos of the King of Bahrain in May 2012 have been upheld on appeal, Bahrain Mirror reported.

She has been sentenced to a total of three years and one month and is at risk of immediate rearrest.

Amnesty further urged Bahrain to repeal all legislation that criminalizes the right to freedom of expression, and respect and protect this right.

Almost daily protests have been held against the Al Khalifa regime since February 2011, when thousands of pro-democracy protesters took to the streets, calling for the royal family to leave power.

The protesters have also slammed the Manama regime’s arrest and torture of the political activists, demanding their release.
