TEHRAN (IQNA) – On Thursday, the first day of Iran’s 33rd International Holy Quran Competition, it was the turn for 16 contenders to demonstrate their Quranic talents.

The first day opened with recitation of verses from the Holy Quran by Mehdi Gholamnejad as a guest reciter.

Then eight Qaris and eight memorizers from different countries went on the stage one after another.

Representatives of Iraq, the Republic of Azerbaijan, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Morocco, the Philippines, Iran and Indonesia showed their skills in the recitation category on the first night.

In memorization, contenders from Bangladesh, Pakistan, Egypt, Morocco, Australia, Tanzania and Ethiopia read the verses decided by the panel of judges from memory.

Performing Ibtihal and Tawashih and honoring the families of a number of martyrs were among the sideline programs of the first day.

All in all, the level of both reciters and memorizers seemed to be good.

The first night also witnessed the presence of a large number of people, including cultural, arts and sports figures, who assembled in the competition hall to see the performance of the contenders.

The 33rd International Holy Quran Competition of the Islamic Republic of Iran kicked off in a ceremony at Imam Khomeini (RA) Mosalla (prayer hall) in Tehran on Wednesday.

Some 130 Quran reciters and memorizers from over 70 countries are taking part in the contest, whose motto is "One Book, One Ummah”.
