The center's first ever "Lunch with Your Neighbors" event offered people of all faiths tours of the Islamic Center, information booths, and discussions on Islam and an outdoor barbecue, CIProud reported.
The center plans to make the event an annual tradition. Members of the center say they hope this event will show the public how diverse Peoria's Muslim community is.
"The American Muslim community here in Peoria wanted to reach out to the general population in Peoria and kind of introduce them to ourselves as a community and our center and just get to know each other and socialize with the general folks around town," explained Syed Ahmad, a spokesperson for the Center.
Organizers estimate more than 500 people came out and participated at the event.
