TEHRAN (IQNA) – Boosting cultural and spiritual programs during the Arabeen season would be a main priority for next year, an Iranian official said.

Speaking to IQNA, Hossein Zolfaqari, a deputy interior minister and head of the Arbaeen Headquarters, said cultural activities will be given more importance in the coming year.

He hailed the successful organization of this year’s Arabeen processions in Iraq and highlighted Iran’s role in helping the Arab country during the religious rituals.

He also noted that 3.22 million Iranians registered their names to go on Arbaeen pilgrimage last month.

Arbaeen, which is one of the largest religious gatherings in the world, comes 40 days after Ashura, the martyrdom anniversary of Imam Hussein (AS) and his companions in the 680AD Battle of Karbala.

Each year, a huge crowd of Shias, including many Iranians, flock to Karbala, where the holy shrine of Imam Hussein (AS) is located, to perform mourning rites on Arbaeen.

Arbaeen falls on October 19 this year.
