Luxembourg FM Calls for EU Recognition of Independent Palestine

TEHRAN (IQNA) – Luxembourg's Foreign Minister Jean Asselborn is in favor of the European Union recognizing Palestine as an independent state.

He stated this in an interview published on Sunday in the German newspaper Tagesspiegel am Sonntag.

In this way, in his opinion, Brussels could be a counterbalance to Washington and US President Donald Trump's Middle East policy.

"The recognition of Palestine by the whole EU would be a signal that the Palestinians have a need for a homeland, a state, just like the Israelis," he insisted.

"Failure to comply with the provisions of international law will result in at least 5 million additional refugees in the Middle East," Asselborn concluded. "It cannot be in Israel's interest."
