TEHRAN (IQNA) – A prayer leader has been arrested in Nigeria’s northern Kano State for leading Friday prayers despite a ban.

According to the Iranian Cultural Center in Nigeria, the Governor of Kano State said Abdullah Gandujeh, the imam, has defied the ban on mass prayers introduced to stem the spread of the coronavirus.

He noted that all gatherings, including religious gatherings, have been banned amid the COVID-19 outbreak.

The prayer leader has broken the law by violating the ban, the governor said.

The novel coronavirus has infected more than 2.48 million people worldwide and killed over 170,000.

As of Monday Nigeria had more than 660 confirmed cases of coronavirus.

In order to contain the spread of the disease, most countries have closed mosques, churches and other religious centers and banned gatherings.
