Iran’s President Offers Condolences to Iraq over Tragic Hospital Fire

In a message to Iraqi Prime Minster Mustafa al-Kadhimi, Rouhani expressed condolences to the premier and to the Iraqi people.

He said the Iranian nation and government were saddened by news of the tragic incident.

Rouhani also prayed for God’s mercy and blessings on the victims, recovery for the wounded, and patience for the families of the victims.

The death toll from the fire that tore through a coronavirus ward at a hospital in southern Iraq has risen to 92, health officials said.

Officials said more than 100 people were injured in the blaze at al-Hussein Teaching Hospital on Monday night in Nasiriya.

An investigation showed the fire began when sparks from faulty wiring spread to an oxygen tank that then exploded, police and civil defense authorities said.

Prime Minister al-Kadhimi convened an emergency meeting and ordered the suspension and arrest of the health director in Dhi Qar province, the hospital director and the city’s civil defense chief. The government also launched a time-bound investigation.
