Bangladesh Vows 'Stern Action' Against Killers of Rohingya Leader
Mohib Ullah, 46, leader of the Rohingya Muslim refugee community in Bangladesh, was gunned down by unknown assailants in the Kutupalong refugee camp in Cox's Bazar on Wednesday night.
He had fled Myanmar in 2017 in the midst of a brutal military crackdown against the Muslim community.
"The government will take stern action against those who were involved in the killing. No one will be spared," Foreign Minister A.K. Abdul Momen said, adding, “The killers of Mohib Ullah must be brought to justice."
Kutupalong, where Mohib Ullah was killed, is home to the world’s biggest refugee camp.
About a million displaced Rohingya, many of them traumatized by the campaign of killing, rape and village burning by Myanmar’s military, are housed in bamboo and tarp shelters erected across the camp.
The vast majority of the refugees fled Myanmar's 2017 crackdown that the United Nations has said was carried out with genocidal intent.
Mohib Ullah's shack stored numerous papers documenting the atrocities of Myanmar's military.
He led the Arakan Rohingya Society for Peace and Human Rights (ARPSH) and advocated for the Rohingya’s return to their homes in Rakhine State.
