Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei made the remarks in a Wednesday meeting with the visiting Turkmen President Serdar Berdimuhamedow in Tehran.

The Leader noted that the deepening of ties between the two neighbors is in the best interest of both states. “The policy of the Islamic Republic of Iran is to expand relations with neighboring countries.”

Some regional and international opponents oppose friendly relations between Tehran and Ashgabat but obstacles should be removed, he added.

“The Joint Cooperation Commission between the two countries should be seriously active and the agreements should be finalized with continuous follow-up,” he stressed.

For his part, Berdimuhamedow said that his government’s priority is to expand relations with neighbors.

“According to the cooperation documents signed today, we are trying to further strengthen the good relations between the two countries in various fields, especially gas, electricity, and freight, as well as the implementation of major projects.”

Touching upon the 30th anniversary of the establishment of relations between the two states, the Turkmen president thanked the Islamic Revolution Leader’s constant support in enhancing bilateral ties.

Iranian President Ebrahim Raeisi officially welcomed his Turkmen counterpart Serdar Berdimuhamedow in the Saadabad complex on Wednesday morning.

The sides signed nine Memorandums of Understanding as well as a joint statement to boost cooperation.
