Prophet Lut; 20 Years of Steadfastness against Sinners

TEHRAN (IQNA) – Prophet Lut (AS) was among companions of Prophet Ibrahim (AS) in inviting people to monotheism. He was tasked to travel to other cities to promote monotheism.

On this path, he faced many difficulties and harassments but in a commendable manner remained patient and steadfast and continued his efforts to guide people.

Lut was the son of Haran and grandson of Tarokh. His name is mentioned in the Quran 27 times. The Holy Book refers to him as a prophet of God and a righteous man who faced an insubordinate and sinful people. He invited this people to the religion of Ibrahim (AS) but they disobeyed him.

Prophet Lut (AS) was a relative Prophet Ibrahim (AS). According to different accounts he was Ibrahim’s (AS) cousin, nephew, or brother-in-law. After Ibrahim (AS) started his invitation, Lut (AS) accepted the faith and accompanied Ibrahim (AS) to the land of Kanaan (Palestine). Later, he was commissioned by God to go to other cities and lands, especially the land of Mutfikat, to invite people to the right path.  

The people of Mutfikat committed sins such as sodomy. Mutfikat is among the lands whose people received divine punishment, according to the Quran.

The Holy Book says the people committed sodomy, banditry and harassing their guests. Lut (AS) invited them to accept the religion of Ibrahim (AS) but their refused and harassed him.

Lut (AS) made efforts for 20 years to lead them to the right path but they insisted on their sins and ultimately were punished by God.

The Quran mentions Lut’s (AS) name 27 times and refers to him with attributes such as Hikma (wisdom) and knowledge). In some sources, he has been described by attributes as generosity and hospitality.

His wife has been portrayed as a negative character. She would defend the sins committed by the people and even helped them harass Lut (AS). According to the verses of the Quran and historical accounts, she was punished by God like other people of Mutfikat.

Lut (AS) had two daughters, one of whom was the mother of Prophet Ayyub (Job). Prophet Shuayb (AS) has also been mentioned as Lut’s (AS) son-in-law. Lut’s (AS) daughters left the city with him before the divine punishment came.

Some stories about Lut (AS) and his people, including the coming of angels to the city of Sodom, the punishment of the people, and Lut (AS) and his daughters being saved from the punishment, have been mentioned in the Torah.

Prophet Lut (AS) is said to have been buried in the city of Bani Naeem in now Palestine’s Al-Khalil province.
