Surah Al-Rahman; God’s Question about Denying Favors
Al-Rahman is the 55th chapter of the Quran that has 78 verses and is in the 27th Juz. Scholars have offered different views about whether it is Makki or Madani. Al-Rahman is the 97th Surah revealed to the Holy Prophet (PBUH).
It is known as the Bride of Quran, based on a Hadith from the Holy Prophet (PBUH).
The name of the Surah comes from the word Al-Rahman (The Beneficent), which is an attribute of God, in the first verse.
The Surah considers the world to be following an order which both mankind and jinn benefit from. It divides the world into two categories: the transient and the lasting.
It says that in the hereafter, happiness and misery, reward and punishment are separated.
The Surah underlines that the entire world of existence, both this world and the next, has an interconnected system and that whatever there is in the world is God’s favor. That is why it asks humans and jinn 31 times “Which favors of your Lord will you both (humans and jinn) deny?”
The chapter begins with the beneficence of God that covers all beings and ends by praising the Lord.
Surah Al-Rahman enumerates God’s favors in this world and the hereafter. It also discusses the Day of Judgment and its features and how people’s deeds are assessed.
In this chapter, teaching the Quran, creation of man and jinn, creation of plants, trees, and heavens, dominance of rules, creation of earth and its features, creation of fruits, flowers, and herbs, and connection of two seas (salt water and sweet water) have been mentioned as some of God’s bounties.
The smallest verse of the Quran is also in this Surah: “The greenest of green pastures.” (Verse 64)
In verse 19, it talks about two seas: “He has made the two seas to flow freely (so that) they meet together.” Scholars believe the verse refers to the Adriatic Sea and the North Sea near Denmark.
