It is also considered inappropriate in all cultures to whisper in the presence of others.
God says in the Quran: “There is nothing good in much of their secret talks except for that which is for charity, justice, or for reconciliation among people to seek thereby the pleasure of God for which We will give a great reward.” (Verse 114 of Surah An-Nisa)
In all cultures, it is considered unacceptable for two people to whisper in the presence of others, because others might think that the two are backbiting.
Recommendations about avoiding backbiting are aimed at preventing misunderstandings.
In this verse, God introduces some exceptions for whispering and they are aimed at maintaining the atmosphere of friendship and protecting other’s honor and reputation.
One exception is whispering to invite a person to do a charitable act or doing something good to another person.
Another is whispering to reconcile and restore friendly relations between two people, which is among the best of virtuous deeds.
These exceptions should be done with the intention to please God and God will give such a person great and immediate reward. Apart from these exceptions, whispering is not acceptable.
God says in Verse 7 of Surah Al-Mujadilah: “There is no secret talk between three but He is the fourth of them; nor between five but He is the sixth of them; nor between fewer or more but He is with them wherever they are.”
It would be such a blessing for one to see God present even in friendly whisperings. This presence is so heart-warming and encourages us to do good and prevents us from going toward improper deeds and words.
