IQNA – Saudi security forces have reportedly arrested an Iraqi university professor in the holy city of Mecca over paying tribute to Palestinian leader Ismail Haniyeh who was assassinated last week in an Israeli strike.

The professor, Salman Dawood al-Sabawi, was paying homage to the assassinated Hamas political chief Ismail Haniyeh while performing the Umrah Hajj rituals, according to a report by Press TV, which cited reports from social media users.

Online activists reported the arrest via X, formerly known as Twitter. Their posts included pictures of Sabawi holding a banner in the courtyard of the Masjid al-Haram, Islam’s holiest site. The banner read, "I dedicate his Umrah Hajj to martyred Ismail Haniyeh" in Arabic.

Following the news of Sabawi's detention, many social media users took to X, Facebook, and other platforms, demanding his immediate and unconditional release. Sabawi is a resident of the southern Iraqi city of Mosul.

Ismail Haniyeh, who was in Tehran to attend the swearing-in ceremony of Iran’s new president, Masoud Pezeshkian, was martyred along with his bodyguard in an Israeli attack early on July 31.

Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei has warned the Israeli regime of a “harsh response” for Haniyeh’s assassination, calling it the Islamic Republic’s duty to avenge the Palestinian resistance leader’s blood.

“The criminal and terrorist Zionist regime martyred our dear guest in our homeland and left us bereaved, but it also set the ground for a harsh punishment for itself,” the Leader said.
