The ministry recently announced the launch of the “Reviving Maktabs” initiative to restore one of the most prominent traditions of religious education in the country, aiming to provide proper Quranic education across all provinces.
Immediately following the announcement of this initiative, the Awqaf department in Alexandria has begun implementing the project, according to Al-Ahram newspaper.
Sheikh Asim Qubaisi, the representative of the Awqaf ministry in Alexandria, expressed gratitude for the decision made by Awqaf Minister Usama Al-Azhari to reopen the traditional schools in all governorates.
He described this decision as totally correct and emphasized that it reflects the Egyptian government's commitment to spreading religious and ethical knowledge among the younger generations.
Qubaisi stressed that the aim of this decision is to develop the teaching of the Holy Quran based on sound principles and to educate the new generations in the Arabic language.
He stated that the Quran opens the minds of its memorizers and grants them dignity, making it an essential tool for establishing balance in society and countering temptations that may influence young people.
He noted that the Alexandria province has more than 100 Maktabs to welcome children and students, adding that they are affiliated with the main mosques in each area.
Considering the high demand from the public, this number is likely to increase, he stated, adding that it reflects the community’s interest in this initiative, as they trust the ability of these centers to provide religious education to their children under the guidance of qualified teachers.
The official went on to say that this initiative demonstrates the clear direction of the ministry towards building a generation that is aware and committed to religious values, while also addressing the challenges posed by the technological age.

He emphasized that the ministry is currently working to respond to citizens’ requests for an increase in the number of Maktabs.
Meanwhile, Sheikh Mahmoud Nasr, the head of Quranic affairs at Alexandria’s Awqaf department, explained that the governorate currently has 108 Maktabs located in major mosques distributed throughout various neighborhoods, ensuring coverage for all areas.
He added that the schools operate completely free of charge after the afternoon prayer.
He said that during the first week of implementing this decision, there was a significant turnout of parents eager to enroll their children.
Nasr further mentioned that these schools operate under the supervision of the Awqaf ministry and Al-Azhar Islamic Center, with teaching conducted in a traditional manner by Al-Azhar instructors, free from any extremist ideologies, which has increased public trust in the initiative.
The office receives calls every minute from people inquiring about the nearest schools in their areas, he stated.

He added that Maktabs are not just a place for memorizing the Quran but also an educational environment that promotes values and ethics, contributing to the building of a balanced and strong society.
