IQNA – Muslim women in Ukraine turned World Hijab Day into a cultural movement to introduce Islam to the people of the country.

World Hijab Day in Ukraine

According to Muslimsaroundtheworld, World Hijab Day in Ukraine is no longer a one-day symbolic event.

On this occasion, events are held in different cities of Ukraine. Dialogue and understanding are key to presenting the hijab as a conscious religious choice and a cultural identity with shared human values.

Field observations of the activities show that these programs do not consist of a single event, but are held in the form of independent and sequential stages, all converging in message and content.

Women’s sections in Islamic cultural centers in several cities participated in the event by holding meetings and discussions, alongside initiatives at the national level, in particular the Maryam initiative. This gave the event a comprehensive nature that went beyond narrow local boundaries.

What is remarkable about this movement is the breadth of participation. The activities were not limited to Islamic cultural centers, but also extended to public cultural institutions such as state libraries and national cultural centers. This indicated an institutional acceptance of the dialogue and a willingness to include the issue of hijab in the public cultural discourse. This shift from the religious to the civil sphere helped break down psychological barriers and open direct channels of communication with non-Muslim audiences in a neutral cultural environment.

As part of the celebration of World Hijab Day in southeastern Ukraine, the Center for National Cultures at the Zaporizhzhia Regional Library organized a cultural event hosted by representatives of the Safiya Muslim Women’s Organization. The event was dedicated to introducing the public to the religious and cultural significance and function of the hijab.

Participants provided explanations of the reasons for wearing the hijab, highlighting the similarities between traditional women’s clothing in Ukrainian heritage and in other cultures, thus introducing the hijab into a common human context. The event included practical demonstrations of different ways of wearing the hijab and showcasing the experiences of Ukrainian women.

The discussions focused on presenting the hijab beyond common stereotypes, portraying it as a personal choice stemming from belief and identity, rather than a symbol of imposition or exclusion, and presenting it as a cultural practice known to diverse communities. Practical demonstrations and panel discussions helped bring the concept closer to the participants’ everyday lives, shifting the discussion from preconceived notions to direct understanding.

These ongoing events demonstrate that World Hijab Day in Ukraine has become a framework for a broad cultural dialogue through which Muslim women redefine their presence in society as an active and participatory force in building mutual understanding. With its broader reach and diverse partners, the week is establishing itself as a model for how to transform a symbolic occasion into a real social movement that promotes the values of respect and coexistence in a multicultural society.
