Living in a world where you are wrongly perceived as oppressed and insignificant members of the most misunderstood faith can be frustrating. Muslim women face that frustration every day. We face questions from the way we dress to the way we interact with the opposite sex and everything in between.

In order to increase awareness and engage the community, this year we embarked upon a mission to give Muslim women an outlet to express the reality of their lifestyles, share accomplishments that benefit humanity and inspire others to do the same. Exploring the roles of Muslim women, discussing the struggles of the changing environment as they relate to our roles, as well as addressing our daily challenges became primary focal points in our efforts towards engaging our communities.

Many services are available to combat the challenges faced by women, however many of them are missing much needed guidelines specific to Muslim women and families. One of the main elements is the foundation of unity built on sisterhood.

Being ME – Muslimah Empowered is a strong women’s support network that includes professionals from various industries, university students, educators, volunteers of various backgrounds, respected mothers, grandmothers and more. The conference is organized by women for women. This is the first women’s conference in Sydney and one of the biggest in Australia, to address the daily lives and challenges facing Muslim Women today. Through our Annual Conference we aspire to provide growth as a community and individually, to celebrate successes, showcase achievements and to enlighten, encourage and empower every Muslimah.

The first Being Me Conference, to be held on 1 December 2013 in Sydney, features a number of national and international speakers, who will provide various perspectives into a Muslim woman’s life. A woman who is empowered through her worship of Allah (swt), who is a leader and an entrepreneur, who is a mother of righteous children, who strives for the best. Among the speakers are international writer, entrepreneur and life coach Sr Zohra Sarwari, amazing teacher and student of Islamic Sciences Sr Faiza Matthews, psychologist and medical student Dr Sara Hassan and co-founder of the First Islamic School in Sydney Sr Silma Ihram. Adding to the phenomenal speaker line-up are Sh Alaa El Sayed from Canada and Sh Yahya Ibrahim from Perth, Australia.

Through the Being Me Conference on 1 December 2013, we strive to provide a platform where women from different walks of life and aspirations are given opportunities to learn, teach, share, and inspire consequently empowering others and themselves by identifying and exploring the true role of a Muslimah to benefit those they love and all of humanity hence ultimately please their Lord.

We want to show you that Muslim Womanhood is something worth celebrating and that Muslim women have been great throughout time. We will showcase achievements and successes of empowered women of the past and the present and inspire women of today by focusing on our role models: mothers’ of believers, scholars (of past and present), visionary women throughout time. This will create a voice and platform for the neglected and marginalized half of the society!
