Palestinians have staged a demonstration in the village of Nabi Saleh in the occupied West Bank to protest the Israeli treatment of Palestinian prisoners in Ashkelon prison.

The Sunday demonstration turned violent after the Israeli soldiers attacked the protesters.

Israeli police also fired tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse the angry crowd.

Many residents of the village have some members of their family inside the Ashkelon prison.

The prisoners have been subjected to numerous raids and solitary confinement, and many have been injured by Israeli guards.

More than 4,500 Palestinian prisoners, including about 170 administrative detainees, are held in Israeli prisons, many of them without charges or trial.

Administrative detention is a sort of imprisonment without trial or charges that allows Israel to incarcerate Palestinians for up to six months. The detention order can be renewed for indefinite periods of time.

Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails have been suffering human rights violations such as the use of torture during interrogations by prison authorities.
