Two bomb attacks in Imam Ali (AS) Mosque in northern Iraq on Saturday left at least 15 worshippers killed.

Many more were injured in the twin bombings that took place in the Tuzkhurmatu region, Al-Manar news network reported.

A car bomb caused the first explosion which was followed by another one when a suicide bomber detonated his explosives belt at the entrance of the mosque.

Shalal Ahmed, deputy police commander in the region said he was certain that Al-Qaeda were behind the terrorist attack.

He said the bombings caused huge damage to the surrounding areas as the mosque is situated in the middle of a marketplace.

Sunni leaders in Iraq say they have decided to close Sunni mosques in protest to the attacks on clerics and worshippers.

Sectarian violence has surged in Iraq in the past seven months. While the majority of the attacks have been against Shia Muslims, Sunnis have also been killed in the terrorist bombings in the country.
