The Mufti of Poland met with local officials in the Podlaskie region to discuss ways to increase cooperation in preserving and promoting the historical and cultural heritage of the Polish Tatars and to launch a museum dedicated to the history of this Muslim group.

According to the Muslimsaroundtheworld website, the collective memory of societies is not preserved solely through mosques, cemeteries and documents; it also requires institutions to collect and transmit this memory to future generations. Therefore, it is important to consider creating a museum dedicated to the history of the Polish Tatars to preserve their narratives and introduce them to the wider society.

In Podlaskie, a region where a significant part of the Polish Tatar Muslim community resides, efforts are underway to develop various means of revitalizing this heritage, from museums and educational programs to cultural events, tourism initiatives and festivals.

In this context, Sheikh Tomasz Mięskiewicz, Mufti of the Republic of Poland, discussed with Piotr Reczko, head of the Municipality of Sokoła, ways to enhance cooperation in the preservation and promotion of the historical and cultural heritage of the Polish Tatars.

One of the key topics discussed was the creation of a dedicated site for the history of the Polish Tatars, potentially operating as a branch of a museum, to provide an institutional framework for preserving historical documents and memory, while making them accessible to local residents and visitors alike.

This proposal adds significant value to efforts to preserve the Tatar heritage, and by bringing together various aspects of the history, culture and journey of the community in a single space, it goes beyond the mere preservation of historical sites, turning this heritage into a source of knowledge for new generations.

The meeting also addressed the history of Tatars in Poland and their presence in Podlaskie, a region home to several key sites related to the history of Muslim Tatars, most notably the Kruszyniany and Bohuniki mosques and the associated Muslim cemeteries. These sites serve as tangible evidence of the long-standing presence of the Tatar community and its commitment to preserving its religious and cultural identity.

The efforts go beyond the proposed museum project, and both sides discussed the development of joint cultural, educational and tourism initiatives aimed at giving Tatar heritage a more prominent role in cultural life and in programs designed for local residents and visitors.
