Some political groups in Senegal say holding Quran competitions in the country creates tension.

While Senegal’s president has proposed a plan to the parliament for organizing national Quran contests, some opposition groups have opposed the plan, rewmi website reported.

Based on the proposal, a Quran memorization and recitation contest will be held under the title of Presidential Award for Quran Competition.

The opposition groups claim that if such a competition is held for Muslims, there should also be similar contests for other religious books like the Torah and Bible.

An opposition member in the parliament said such competitions would mean the beginning of inter-religious tension and discrimination against followers of other faiths.

If the parliament passes the proposal, the government will organize a great national Quran competition in 2014.

Islam is the predominant religion in Senegal where 94 percent of the population is estimated to be Muslim.
