The meeting was opened Sunday, March 9, with a speech by head of Al-Azhar Islamci Center Sheikh Ahmed Al-Tayyeb, ledevoir website reported.
In his speech, Al-Tayyeb, without directly mentioning Muslim Brotherhood, criticized “groups that introduce Islam as a religion of violence”.
UAE foreign minister was another speaker at the opening ceremony. He said extremists ideologies have troubled the Muslim world and led to the rise of terrorism.
He stated that the meeting is a chance for drawing up a roadmap for the Muslim Ummah to live in peace and act on the teachings of Islam.
The meeting, which will conclude on Monday, discusses the political situations in Muslim countries as well as issues like overseeing Fatwas (religious edicts).
The United Arab Emirates is the biggest financial supporter of the military rulers in Egypt. It has backed Saudi Arabia’s recent decision to ban Muslim Brotherhood activities.
