Egypt Quran Competition Starts in Cairo

The 21st edition of Egypt’s international Holy Quran contest kicked off in the capital Cairo on Saturday.

A number of the country’s political and religious officials including minister of Awqaf and Islamic affairs and deputy head of Al-Azhar Islamic Center were present at the opening ceremony held at Cairo’s Nasr district, Sadi Al-Balad website reported.
Muhammad Mukhtar Guma, the Awqaf minister, in an address to the ceremony urged Quran activists to promote tolerance and stand up against extremism.
He said Islam is the religion of peace, compassion and hope and its teachings are against terrorism, violence and extremism.
He also said that by holding the Quran competition, the organizers seek to spread the culture of tolerance.
Sheikh Khalid Ahmed Khayyat, an Emirati Quran activist who serves as a jury member of the competition, also addressed the ceremony, praising Egypt for attaching importance to Quranic activities.
The 21st international Quran competition of Egypt will run for a week with the participation of 65 Quran memorizers and reciters from 50 Arab and Islamic countries.
