Algeria’s ministry of Awqaf and religious affairs said it plans to renovate the country’s old mosques.

Speaking in a press conference on Monday, Algeria’s Religious Affairs Minister Abu Abdullah Gulamullah made the announcement, saying that mosques have a key role in the social structure and identity of Muslims.

The official noted that the old mosque in Constantine will be among the first to be renovated in the country.

Constantine is the capital of Constantine Province in north-eastern Algeria. It has been selected as the cultural capital of the Arab world in the year 2015.

With its old mosques and suspended bridges over the abyss of a canyon, the city is getting ready for the happening with a round of cultural and artistic events which are expected to attract thousands of visitors.
