The new annual contest is aimed at spreading a culture of learning about Islam and the Quran among students in the country, according to a source on the organizing committee said.
The judges include 12 scholars and memorizers of the Holy Quran. The Saudi Scientific Society for the Holy Quran and its Sciences (Tebyan) under the aegis of Jeddah Gov. Prince Mishaal bin Majed, organized the event.
More than SR1 million in prize money will be distributed to the winners on May 12 at the end of the contest, the source said.
Salah Baothman, secretary of the Jeddah branch of the Tebyan society, said the contest is open to men and women students of 30 government universities and 30 private universities and colleges.
The categories include memorization of the full text, and five, 10 and 20 chapters, while observing rules of recitation and intonation.
