A hospital in the province of Xinjiang, China, has banned fasting for its Muslim employees.

According to Ajib website, the hospital's Muslim staff will be unable to fast during the holy month of Ramadan.

Ramadan is the month of fasting in which able-bodied Muslims abstain from food and drink from sunrise to sunset.
The hospital officials claim that fasting prevents the staff from carrying out their duties properly.
Some 9 million Uyghur Muslims live in Xinjiang province. The Muslim minority have been subject to discrimination and pressures.
The Uyghurs World Congress, whose headquarters is in Munich, Germany, has condemned the decision by the Chinese hospital and called for an end to such moves against Muslims living in China.
