Sajjad Karim MEP has been nominated as the Parliament presidential candidate for the European Conservatives and Reformists group (ECR).

Sajjad, the Conservative Legal Affairs spokesperson, has been at the forefront of the Conservatives reformist agenda in Europe, notably steering key reforms through the Parliament which have reduced EU red tape, introduced a new framework for EU legislation and increased national parliament powers. The North West MEP was the first British Muslim to be elected to the Parliament in 2004 and was re-elected for a consecutive third term last month.
He currently holds chairmanship of the Advisory Committee on MEP Code of Conduct which seeks to shutdown corrupt practices in the Parliament.
Dr Karim, a dual national with British and Pakistani citizenship, also successfully established the first ever EU Friends of Pakistan group which has gone from strength to strength under his dynamic chairmanship.
Speaking from Brussels today, he said: “This is a historical moment for Europe. Extremist forces have come to the fore in EU politics only weeks ago, and today Europe has an opportunity to answer those forces with a positive message of what we believe Europe to be.
“Our diversity is our biggest strength. I will be relying on a record of 10 years of action and delivery throughout Europe and further afield. And I call upon all fair minded MEPs to lend me their support.”
